Inaugurated in 1930, it has a collection of scientific instruments from the Medici (15th to 17th centuries) and Lorraine (18th to 19th centuries) eras, including those used for mathematical and astronomical purposes by Galileo Galilei. Examples are the lens he used to discover the four moons of Jupiter and other remnants of his scientific academy, Accademia del Cimento (Academy of Experiment), formerly in the Palazzo Pitti.
